Tesco is the market-leading supermarket brand in the UK, with more than 3,400 stores around the country. Its stores around the UK range from large hypermarkets selling groceries, homeware and Tesco’s own F&F clothing range, to the increasingly popular Tesco Express convenience stores. Tesco has several private label ranges, including Healthy Living and its high-end Finest selection, and is preparing to launch a new discount brand to help it compete with hard discounters Aldi and Lidl. It also operates filling stations and offers banking, insurance and mobile phone services. Tesco reported its biggest ever Christmas results for the 2017 season, outperforming other grocers by nearly 4 percent. The brand’s Christmas ad featured a range of families across the UK celebrating the season, including – somewhat controversially – a Muslim family celebrating the season and exchanging gifts. Tesco’s Clubcard loyalty program is highly popular, personalising rewards based on extensive customer data. Tesco’s long-standing brand mantra is “Every little helps”, which refers to value for money as well as Tesco’s work in the community, raising money and promoting good causes. In early 2018, Tesco completed a £4 billion takeover of the wholesaler Booker, creating a new powerhouse in the UK food market. Tesco began expanding overseas in the 1990s and now has more than 6,800 shops worldwide.
