Sky began as a pay TV provider and has become a leading entertainment and communications business across Europe. As well as investing £5.2 billion in content a year, it provides fixed-line telephone and broadband services to UK homes. Sky subscribers have access to a range of content, including films and television series, but one of the biggest draws for consumers is the growing array of sports channels, which feature live coverage of English Premier League football. The UK pay TV sector has become increasingly competitive in recent years, and Sky is the UK’s biggest spender on advertising, often featuring A-list talent such as footballer David Beckham and actor Idris Elba. In late 2017, Sky Media offered £100,000 of airtime as a prize in its competition encouraging British brands to “be braver” and submit their ideas for a campaign targeting ethnic minority groups. Sky itself has been focusing on the “Sky Ocean Rescue” campaign, with a series of documentaries urging consumers and businesses to reduce plastic use. Celebrity endorsers include model Jodie Kidd and Olympic rower James Cracknell. In February 2018, Sky recruited Engine Group's Europe and Asia boss Debbie Klein to the new position of group Chief Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer.
