BP is an oil and gas producer best known to UK consumers for its network of over 1,280 filling stations around the country, which make it the largest single-branded network in the country. This includes 600 “bunker” sites designed specifically for heavy-goods vehicles. BP describes its business as moving energy around the globe; it finds and produces oil and gas, and manufactures and markets fuels and raw materials used in everyday products. In 2017, the business had its most productive year for a decade, with progress on seven major new projects that help BP towards its goal to boost production by the equivalent of 800,000 barrels of oil per day by 2020. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was hugely damaging for the company, costing it many millions of dollars in fines and leading the brand to keep a low public profile for many years. Its return to advertising has included a campaign featuring well-known local and international sportspeople overcoming adversity promoting “The Energy Within”. Online, BP has been promoting its use of technology on its Thunder Horse platform in the Gulf of Mexico, where crawlers and flying robots are being used to carry out inspections.
