Auchan is a family-owned and employee-owned chain of supermarkets, hypermarkets and convenience stores. It operates around 3,600 stores in 17 countries around the world, and has a growing e-commerce presence. It has recently been focusing on smaller format convenience and “ultra-convenience” stores, with 94 percent of recent openings falling into this category, particularly in France and China. In its Vision 2025 strategy, Auchan has announced plans to turn hypermarkets into more than places to shop, with a range of new services, and in-store entertainment linking physical and digital experiences. In 2018, it launched home delivery from 165 of its China stores through a partnership with Alibaba, and is working with Google on ways to offer more personalized “phygital” shopping. Auchan is also focusing its range – and its offering to employees – on being “good, healthy and local,” promoting sustainable consumption and healthier eating.
