The BBC is a public broadcaster with a mission to provide programmes and services that inform, educate, and entertain. It is known for the breadth of its services, which cover news, drama, sport, music, entertainment, and documentaries. In an era of streaming giants, and faced with a new generation watching less live television than ever, the industry has faced massive disruption. In response to these shifts, the BBC in early 2019 launched BritBox, an advertisement-free streaming service, with ITV. It has also bought the rights to every FIFA Women’s World Cup game this year, and is promoting this through its #Changethegame campaign. The campaign follows criticism of the BBC last year over the difference in pay awarded to its men and women staff; efforts to better balance gender representation on air have seen the proportion of programming with an equal gender split rising from 27 to 74 percent this year. Building on the environmental message championed by Sir David Attenborough, the BBC has launched a fashion and lifestyle brand, BBC Planet. The brand was launched during London Fashion Week with a range of sustainable clothing.
