BP runs over 1,200 filling stations around the country, making it the largest single-branded network in the country. Working primarily in the oil and gas sectors, BP describes its business as “reimagining energy for people and our planet”, and is working to switch its emphasis towards renewables. In early 2020, BP’s CEO announced plans to become a net-zero-carbon company by 2050, which will require it to cut more greenhouse gas emissions each year than are produced by the whole of the UK. The global advertising campaign “Possibilities everywhere” launched in early 2019 has ceased; BP has increased its support for the Paralympic Games, signing up to sponsor Channel 4’s coverage of the games from Tokyo, which have been postponed to next year. During the COVID-19 outbreak, BP announced a donation to the mental health charity Mind, enabling it to provide more digital and community services during a time of great stress for many. BP operates 18,900 retail sites in 70 countries.
