Celine is a French ready-to-wear and luxury leather goods brand with nearly 150 stores worldwide and a distribution network through high-end department stores such as Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods, Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché. Celine has been part of the LVMH group since 1996. In 2018, LVMH announced the appointment of Hedi Slimane as Celine’s Artistic and Creative Director, succeeding the British designer Phoebe Philo. As well as designing for the existing accessories and ready-to-wear collections, Slimane’s responsibilities have extended to menswear, couture and fragrance. He has also changed the Celine logo, deleting the sharp accent on the E and adopting black capital letters on a white background—a controversial move in the fashion industry. Slimane’s campaigns are shot in black and white, and are famous for their edgy rock and roll aesthetic, although for autumn/winter 2019/20 Slimane added color, photographing rising US model Marland Backus. In 2019, Celine inaugurated its fourth Parisian boutique. The store features several works by contemporary artists as part of its Celine Art Project. The brand has also just launched its first e-boutique on the Asian market, in Japan.
