First National Bank (FNB) is the oldest bank in South Africa and was initially formed as the Eastern Triocees Province Bank to finance the wool export boom. FNB was listed on both the JSE and the Botswana exchange and on May 22, 1998 it was delisted to become an operating subsidiary of FirstRand, which relisted three days later. In 2016, FNB ranked as the top bank in market cap and second in income, placing it firmly in South Africa’s “Big Four” banks. FNB’s emphasis on innovation has led to many recent awards for its mobile and online banking portals, and since 2012 has consistently won the Sunday Times’ SA’s Coolest Bank award. It ranks amongst the top of the South African Customer Satisfaction Index. Its corporate slogan, “How can we help you?” underscores its customer-centric attitude. More recently, its successful campaign around the Springbok rugby squad has successfully conveyed the message that it takes a much larger and sometimes not so visible supporting crew to make a great team, not just its 15 most visible players. FNB’s highly influential and strong connections throughout the country is manifest in its acacia tree logo, representative of its longtime and deep roots in South Africa.
