HSBC is one of the world’s largest financial service providers, with around 3,900 offices in 66 countries and territories worldwide, serving 39 million customers. In the UK it provides personal banking and finance, corporate and investment banking. The bank has recently been through a global brand refresh, which includes the launch of HSBC’s first “sound identity” alongside the enhanced use of HSBC’s hexagon-based logo to make the brand both more consistent and distinctive. The sound identity comprises several pieces of electronic music that the brand says reflect its promise: “Together We Thrive”. Some of HSBC’s advertising this year has proved controversial, with its “We are not an island” campaign, celebrating Britain’s “inescapably international” character. This was seen as anti-Brexit by some critics, prompting the brand to say the ads were not a comment on Brexit, rather on the international outlook of British people.
