Bank Mega’s business includes consumer, commercial and corporate banking, but it is best known to the public as a credit-card provider, and promotes itself as a one-stop shop for consumers’ banking needs.
In the past year, Bank Mega has become a partner of the Spanish football club FC Barcelona in Indonesia. It is the club’s official banking partner in the country, and the two brands have run several joint promotions and have created co-branded products. Promotions include the chance for Bank Mega customers to meet FC Barcelona players – a way for the club to get closer to its millions of Indonesian fans and for the bank to capitalize on consumers’ footballing passions.
Other marketing activities in the past year include shopping promotions with Metro department stores, a Mega travel fair and a ticket offer to the Java Jazz festival. Despite the economic climate, the bank has seen a 14 percent increase in net profit.
The bank’s origins were in Bank Karman, which launched in Surabaya in 1969; it rebranded as Mega Bank in 1992, moved its headquarters to Jakarta, and since 2000 has been known as Bank Mega. It was one of the few banks able to survive the economic crisis of the 1990s without government assistance. The company is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The majority stakeholder is CT Corpora, run by former government minister Chairul Tanjung, whose other businesses span media, entertainment and natural resources.
