Investec was established in 1974 as a leasing and financing company, and within 12 years it went public on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). Its rise was supported by a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisition, eventually supporting clients in Africa, UK/Europe and Asia-Pacific. Investec is also the first South African company to list on both the JSE and the London Stock Exchange. It currently has banking operations in Canada, Switzerland and the United States. Recently, the brand split its asset management business from the rest, creating a new brand called Ninety One. On the lighter side, Investec sponsors the annual Investec Cape Town Art Fair, which is one of the foremost showcases of contemporary African art.
