John Lewis is a department store and omni-channel retailer. In late 2018, John Lewis and the upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose, which are both owned by the same parent company, both rebranded to add “& Partners” to their names, as they focus on what makes them different in a highly competitive market – their business model, giving staff a stake in the business, and their culture. This a tough time for both brands, with the group’s profits in 2018 down 45 percent. John Lewis has taken a strong position on the environment, pledging to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 at the latest through new refrigeration and delivery technology. It has also joined the UK Plastics Pact to create a circular economy for plastics. One of the pact’s aims is that, by 2025, 100 percent of plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable. John Lewis is famous for its Christmas TV advertisements; in 2018, it told the story of a young Elton John receiving his first piano.
