Nando’s is a global fast food restaurant specializing in Portuguese-style chicken served with South African art and style. It began in 1987 when Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin purchased a restaurant named Chickenland and renamed it after Duarte’s oldest son Nando. Expanding under the mantra “have fun and then make money,” they eventually grew the chain to more than 1,100 outlets around the world. Nando’s today offers a highly distinctive dining experience highlighted by live music, PERi-PERi sauces, and South African art (it is the largest buyer of contemporary South African art). Riding its popularity, Nando’s has expanded its offering into retail, selling a range of sauces through stores both on and offline. Thanks in part to its large overseas footprint, the brand managed to buck the considerable headwinds facing brands in the country and grew its brand value in 2018.
