QBE Insurance is Australia’s largest global insurer, providing services in Australia, North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. QBE describes its purpose as giving “people the confidence to achieve their ambitions”. A recent campaign to improve road safety in South Australia involved a group of school children using photos of themselves and their families to demonstrate the devastating effect on families of car accidents. The children urge motorists to slow down, keep their distance, and switch off their mobile phone while driving. In early 2019, the business announced a return to profit in 2018, thanks to lower claims for natural disasters, and rising insurance premiums globally. QBE was, however, one of several insurers named by a group of residents and business owners in Townsville whose properties were damaged by flooding and who are struggling to have their claims accepted. QBE has announced it will stop insuring new thermal coal mines, power plants and transport networks this year, and will shut down its thermal coal underwriting business by 2030.
