Tesco is the market-leading supermarket brand in the UK, with more than 3,500 stores around the country. The company was founded as a market stall in the East End of London in 1919, and the first permanent Tesco store opened 10 years later. Its stores around the UK range from large hypermarkets selling groceries, homeware and Tesco’s own F&F clothing range, to the increasingly popular Tesco Express convenience stores, which serve shoppers who are turning their back on a big weekly shop in favour of top-up trips. Tesco has several private label ranges, including Healthy Living and its high-end Finest selection. It also operates filling stations and offers banking, insurance and mobile phone services. Early 2017 saw Tesco start offering their one-hour delivery service to parts of London. The scale of the business in the UK means it sometimes faces criticism, particularly in towns where it is the only supermarket, but the brand is also hugely popular with consumers, particularly for its Clubcard loyalty program, which personalises rewards based on customer data, and this year became contactless at checkouts. Tesco’s long-standing brand mantra is “Every little helps”, which refers to value for money as well as Tesco’s work in the community, raising money and promoting good causes. Its current “Little Helps to Healthier Living” ads are inspired by staff, and suggest healthy swaps people can make to their diets. Tesco began expanding overseas in the 1990s and now has more than 6,800 shops worldwide, which together account for 79 million shopping trips each week. Its international markets include Thailand, India, China and the Czech Republic. Tesco is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
