TPG is Australia’s second-largest internet service provider, with 1.93 million broadband customers, and has 358,000 landline and 422,000 mobile subscribers. The business had been planning to invest heavily in expanding its mobile network – to the point of possibly displacing telephony industry leaders Optus and Vodafone within five years. It was also considering rolling out 5G services. The Federal Government has put the brakes on this plan, however, with its decision in early 2019 to ban the use of Huawei equipment in 5G infrastructure. Broadband providers have been under the spotlight in the past year, as the Competition and Consumer Commission has been comparing advertised connection speeds with those actually achieved by subscribers; many providers have fallen significantly short of delivering on their promises, and TPG has emerged as one of the best, averaging 88.7 percent of advertised speeds, and close to that level during peak evening hours, when performance industry-wide tends to dip. The competition watchdog is looking into a planned AU$15 million TPG merger with Vodafone, which would create a more effective challenger against Telstra and Optus.
