Industry: Telecom Providers

Year formed: 1985

Vodafone has grown from being a small mobile phone operator based in Newbury, in the south of England, into a global telecommunications business operating in more than 30 countries with over 400 million customers. In the UK it offers fixed broadband services, access to premium TV content, landline services, cloud hosting and mobile payment services alongside its provision of telecommunications. Vodafone promotes itself as an innovator, describing itself as “a brand that loves change”, with a mission to empower people, as can be seen through their communications tagline: “Power to You”. It recently became the first UK mobile provider to scrap international roaming charges for customers visiting 50 European destinations. Vodafone communications tend to involve a fun take on what its services can do for users; its ads in the past have included the Star Wars character Yoda discovering his Jedi powers, and more recently, a TV campaign starring Martin Freeman as “Mr Interruption” in a light-hearted story about his unsuccessful attempt to help a friend at a wedding. Freeman warns his friend about the danger of running up a big bill for data if she uploads the newlyweds’ first dance from her smartphone. Vodafone is working to involve more women in the technology sector, and its CSR work focuses on the Vodafone Group Foundation, a global social investment programme supporting activities across 27 countries. In June 2017 the Vodafone Foundation provided free primary and secondary education to 5 million children in Africa. Vodafone is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
