Brand value: US$1,127 million

Headquarter city: Milan

Category: Telecom Providers

Year formed: 1997

Wind began as a mobile phone service provider, launched in Rome in 1997 by the Italian energy giant Enel, France Télécom and Deutsche Telekom. In 1998 it expanded into offering landline services for business, and a year later extended that to cover private households. It is seen as a value-for-money brand in a competitive market, promoting a fun image with the help of celebrities, mainly using TV and online advertising. Giorgio Panariello, an Italian comic actor, has been a brand ambassador for Wind since 2008. Other celebrities featuring in Wind advertising include comedian and presenter Fiorello, and the comic trio Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo. Ads promote the latest offers in a humorous way. The brand’s tagline is “Più vicini”, meaning “closer”. Wind was the main sponsor of A.S. Roma football club between 2007 and 2013. Since the end of 2016, Wind has been owned by Wind Tre SpA, a joint venture between CK Hutchison and VEON. The business is privately owned.
