Woolworths is one of Australia’s leading retailers, operating close to 1,000 supermarkets, liquor stores and discount department stores across Australia. It has recently focused on innovation and adapting to consumer demands for healthier food. Woolworths’ first checkout-free store opened in 2018 in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, allowing shoppers to scan items with a smartphone as they shop, and pay digitally. There are plans to integrate conversational AI into Woolworths operations; customers can already order from Woolworths online by speaking to their Google Home device. On the health front, a new concept store in Sydney’s Double Bay, “The Kitchen by Woolworths” focuses on wellness and organic products, and in early 2019, Woolies launched its “Healthier Easier” online hub, in collaboration with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. It suggests hacks and tips to make healthier eating easier to achieve. A Christmas 2018 collectibles campaign failed to have the same success as a similar promotion by rival Coles, but a Disney collectibles campaign in early 2019 – with the chance to win a trip to Disneyland – had a bigger impact.
